Pork meat broke the export record in the country in 2019. One of the reasons being the ASF

 

According to data disclosed by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), export in Brazil broke a record in 2019. In total, 750.3 thousand tons were shipped last year. The balance is 16.2% higher than the numbers registered in 2018 – with only 646 thousand tons shipped.

Asia, which was heavily affected by outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF), was the major boost for exports over the last 12 months. China alone (the greatest pork meat consumer in the world) has imported 248.80 thousand tons – a volume 61% higher than the 2018 total. Vietnam has also increased its import numbers by 82.6%.

Data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) show that beef and pork exports a  to rise 40% and 34%, respectively, when comparing 2017 (when AFS hadn’t had spread yet) with 2019.

The Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) believes that the chances of ASF entering Brazil are very low. However, pig farmers may adopt sanitary measures that ensure safe handling and life conditions to animals, starting from nutrition.

This is quite important since experiments carried out under actual field conditions improve the reliability of scientific outcomes,” says Ricardo Barbalho, National Sales Manager at ICC Brazil.

The farm has about 1,700 reproductive swine and three nursery installations: the first one has 48 stalls and the other two have 50 stalls each. It also has maternity installations for the growing and termination phases, as well as its feed manufacturing plant and silos to distribute the feed in the nursery installations. The automated feeding equipment installed on the farm allows for simultaneous experiments and the use/evaluation of different diets. It is the third farm in Brazil to receive the automated feeding equipment.
