YuccaChoice is the extract of Yucca Schidigera. A plant species from the family Agavaceae, which grows in deserts.

 

Found almost only in Mexico, in the State of Baja California, the Yucca plant may reach 3 to 4 meters in height; it produces several branches that are picked up when ripe, i.e. when they reach 1 to 2 meters. The main trunk remains untouched and keeps producing new branches in 4 to 5 years.

YuccaChoice is a 100% natural concentrate of Yucca Schidigera dried at low temperatures. It is prepared from the yucca plant, without previous pressure. It contains all-natural juices and solids, typical of the regular Yucca Schidigera composition, no added preservatives, additives or chemical stabilizers!

 

Urease Inhibition

The yucca extract reduces the odor of excreta by inhibiting the urease obtained through the fraction of saponins in the extract (Preston et al. 1987).

Urease is a bacterial enzyme that converts urea to ammonia. Urea is the main end product of nitrogen metabolism, derived from protein.

 

 

Action of Glycocomponents

Another hypothesis is that the water-soluble part of the yucca extract, i.e., the glycol components, has a great affinity for ammonia and binds to it (Headon. 1992). This property is the basis for developing a quality control for yucca extracts, which will measure the amount of extract needed to bind 50% of the ammonia in a “standard” solution.

 

Action of Saponins

Improves digestion and absorption of nutrients

Saponins have the property of being surfactants, as they play an important role in animal nutrition. Owing to this characteristic, saponins improve the permeability of the intestinal wall, which consequently enhances the absorption of nutrients. They also accelerate the microbial activity of the intestinal flora, improving digestion and the use of nutrients.

 

Antiprotozoal Action

Saponins have antiprotozoal action. They emulsify the lipids of the protozoan cell membrane, damaging its structure and reducing its presence in the animal’s intestines (e.g., Giardia lamblia).

 

Quality Control

In addition to the content of saponins, the potential of YuccaChoice to reduce ammonia is measured by determining the “B50 value”. This defines the amount in milligrams of YuccaChoice required to decrease 50% of ammonia in a solution, using the phenol-nitroprusside method to determine it.
