How can you increase milk production on your farm?

Blog, Dairy Cows

You need to know a few technical and operational details about raising farm animals to increase milk production on farms and, in turn, profits.

A farm that works exclusively or not at all in the production and breeding of dairy cattle focuses on increasing the herd’s productive efficiency; this will be reflected in milk production and profit for the producer.

Like any business, it requires planning, which in this case ranges from the infrastructure of the confinement systems to nutritional care and management. To this end, having the backing of a consultancy, with professionals from the veterinary, agronomy, and even civil engineering fields, will make a substantial contribution to developing a good project.

Animal welfare and milk production

It may seem obvious, but the right hygiene and comfort environment for the cow will play an important role in the quality of the milk produced. For example, if the animal experiences a high level of heat stress, its productivity drops to the point of causing a financial loss of up to BRL 1,000 per cow (per year).

Whereas in a prepared environment, with adequate facilities and maintenance so that production takes place smoothly and comfortably, milk production can increase considerably.

In order to know the ideal level for these environments, there is a need for professionals with expertise in the subject. By using specific tools, these professionals are skilled to measure the animal’s stress level, temperature, and many other factors that scientifically determine what constitutes a healthy environment for animal production, such as biological characteristics (reproductive success, productivity, mortality rate, adrenal activity, abnormal behavior, etc.).

Nutrition to increase production

Diets high in starch or concentrate cause digestive, health, and production problems, due to:

  • Reduced rumen pH;
  • Ruminal and systemic acidosis;
  • Increased levels of organic acids; and
  • The increase in lactic acid-producing bacteria;
  • The negative effect on the rumen lining, resulting in damage and/or loss of papillae.

All this damage to the rumen wall generates a critical reduction in the absorption of VFA, resulting in a systemic gateway for microorganisms that can lead to health problems and loss of animal performance. It also reduces feed efficiency and milk production and quality. It also reduces weight gain, which compromises other aspects besides milk production.

RumenYeast® can reverse this situation. The rumen is a fermentation chamber and all the nutrients it absorbs depend on the balance of its microbiota for the animal to perform to its maximum productive potential. Therefore, the better we feed the rumen microbiota, the better the animal performance will be.

RumenYeast® is a natural, functional, and pure choice to face the different challenges of meat production with production efficiency.

With the pioneering Four Steps RumenYeast® (4SRY) technology, RumenYeast® provides improved diet digestibility, maintains gastrointestinal tract integrity, and enhances immune response, enhancing health, welfare, safety, efficiency, and productivity.

Especially in intensive production systems, there is a period of adaptation to grain-rich diets, health challenges, and heat stress.
