Today, the main concern in production is providing optimum conditions for animal welfare, and nowhere is this more important than on the farms. It is why, in addition to be a consumer demand, animal welfare goes hand-in-hand with higher productivity and the quality of the final product. In the Safe Management Series, ICC Brazil expert Melina Bonato, R&D Manager, discuss the importance of the team’s work on the welfare of poultry on farms.

Providing animal welfare means offering comfort to animals, which involves free access to freshwater and feed, appropriate temperature and humidity, and satisfactory day-to-day management. In order to perform these tasks, the training and organization of the professionals and employees involved cannot be underestimated. The management of poultry is especially pertinent because when done correctly, it minimizes the stress that can directly impact production. Therefore, pens must have sufficient ventilation, low noise, no direct contact with other livestock and/or external animals (such as birds and other wild animals), and also be kept dry and protected. Furthermore, regular bed management must also be prioritized to support the comfort of poultry and the final quality of meat and eggs.

Teams motivated by animal welfare can only win as a stress-free animal prioritize the energy and nutrients from their diet into performance and production. That is why producers must hire and periodically train a dedicated labor force with regular updates regarding information essential to improving production. Trained and skilled employees make a difference since daily management, including vaccination programs, mortality checks, curtains control, temperature, humidity, feed, water, weighing and slaughtering or collecting eggs, etc., when appropriately performed and causing less distress to the animals, provides better performance indexes.

Hilyses®: ICC Brazil’s Solution that Improves Animal Welfare to Poultry

There are several options for feed additives on the market capable of providing compounds that help animals cope better with the stress factors that arise in their environment. Dietary nucleotide supplementation has been studied in several species. Although not considered essential nutrients, these components play an essential role in various metabolic processes and especially in some animal’s body tissues and stages of animal life where high cell multiplication causes a high demand for energy.

Hilyses®, produced by ICC Brazil, is obtained by the processing of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae used in the fermentation of sugarcane to obtain ethanol. It is highly digestible as it contains free amino acids, peptides, and short-chain polypeptides and glutamic acid. All of that are strongly recommended supplements for animal nutrition, especially in young animals in the intense growth phase and also in reproductive periods. It also contains mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS, a useful tool against Salmonella and E. coli.) and high levels of β-glucans (immunomodulators that stimulate the innate immune system for a faster and more effective response).
